When customers need a cost-effective, efficient way to cut heat sensitive materials, we often recommend waterjet cutting.  To begin our discussion, it is helpful to have a good grasp of what waterjet cutting is, which TheFabricator provides, “Just call it rapid erosion. Waterjet cutting relies on a high-pressure water pump to push water through a nozzle where the water is mixed with an abrasive, such as garnet or aluminum oxide. The combination of the jet of high-speed water and abrasives erodes the material at which the nozzle is aimed.”  At Machitech Automation, our waterjet cutting systems provide versatility in a unitized system.  They are specifically designed for high precision cutting on a heavy unitized frame that can be increased in size as the customer’s needs grow.  Our systems boast an innovative inverse rail system, bellow protection and exceptional accuracy and cut quality. They are available in the following dimensions – 10’ x 5’, 12’ x 6’, 10’ x 20’ and custom dimensions are also available.  Waterjet cutting systems provide a variety of advantages and we outline three of the most significant benefits below.

  1. Versatility
    • One of the biggest advantages of waterjet cutting is the versatility of materials it can cut.  Waterjet systems can cut metal, rubber, glass and more.  By investing in one waterjet system, your metal fabrication shop will be able to cut a diverse selection of materials.  Waterjet systems provide additional versatility with their ability to cut a range of material thicknesses.  At Machitech Automation, our waterjets can cut up to 4’’ material thickness.
  2. No Heat-Affected Zone
    • Unlike virtually any other cutting medium, waterjet systems cut without creating any heat-affected zone.  Because it is a cold cutting process, material waste from heat distortion is significantly reduced which saves money and expedites the cutting process.    Further, because there is no heat-affected zone you will achieve the cleanest and most accurate cuts which means the material you cut will be a better product for your customers.
  3. Safe & Environmentally Friendly
    • When you cut under water, no hazardous fumes and vapors are generated which means your workshop will be a safer place for you and your employees.  Because waterjets do not produce hazardous waste, there is a reduction in waste disposal costs.  Additionally, waterjets use very little water and water can be recycled as well for an environmentally friendly cutting method.

The Amazing Cutting Power of Plasma

There are a lot of ways to cut through various materials and each method offers its own advantages and disadvantages.  Certain methods can only cut certain materials, certain methods are faster than others, and certain methods offer better accuracy or cut quality, and so on.  When it comes to metal fabrication, there is one method that is simply a cut above – plasma.  Plasma is often described as the fourth state of matter.  The three states of matter are ice, water and steam and the difference between these states relates to their energy levels.  For example, when we add energy in the form of heat to ice, the ice melts and then becomes water. To continue, when we add additional energy, the water then vaporizes into hydrogen and oxygen in the form of steam.  We refer to plasma as the fourth state because when you add additional energy to steam the gases become ionized.  The ionization process causes the gas to become electrically conductive and this electrically conductive ionized gas is called plasma.

For metal fabrication shops that cut electrically conductive metals, plasma cutting is ideal because the process utilizes electrically conductive gas to transfer energy from an electrical power source through a plasma cutting torch to the material being cut.  If you are unfamiliar with how plasma is able to cut through metal, the process is quite elegant and efficient.  A plasma cutting system consists of a power supply, an arc starting circuit and a torch.  These basic system components provide the electrical energy, ionization capability and process control that is necessary to produce high quality, highly productive cuts on a variety of different materials.  Our Machitech Automation systems use a constant current DC power source for the power supply.  The open circuit voltage is typically in the range of 240 to 400 VDC.  The speed and cut thickness capability is determined by the output current (amperage). The arc starting circuit is a high frequency generator circuit that produces an AC voltage of 5,000 to 10,000 volts at approximately 2 megahertz.  The plasma is produced when the voltage is used to create a high intensity arc inside the torch to ionize the gas.  The torch itself functions as the holder for the consumable nozzle and electrode, and it also provides cooling in the form of gas or water to these parts.  The plasma jet is achieved and maintained by the constriction of the nozzle and electrode.  Plasma is an ideal tool for metal fabrication because it is fast, efficient and provides pristine cuts on a wide variety of materials.

How CNC Plasma Enhances Productivity

Most metal fabrication shops high prioritize productivity.  Whether performing intricate and detailed cuts or rapidly producing a high volume of simple cuts, the more you can cut the more you can sell.  Simply put, higher productivity leads to higher profit.  Often, metal fabrication shops get used to the way things are and do not even know how much more productivity could be realized by upgrading machinery and automating processes.  CNC plasma cutting is automated so it is far faster than handheld cutting and Machitech Automation’s CNC plasma system features are vast, providing a distinct advantage over competitors.

If you have been deciding what type of cutting system is right for your metal fabrication shop, plasma is an ideal choice for upgrading productivity.  TheFabricator explains why CNC plasma cutting systems are the right choice for enhancing productivity, “When you are considering operating cost, you must also look at your desired production rate. The cost per part is determined by the cost per hour to run the machine, divided by the number of parts produced per hour. Production rate is calculated by comparing cutting speed. A fair evaluation of productivity takes into consideration the number of cutting tools because you can easily have a machine with multiple heads cutting simultaneously… For the purpose of comparison, we will examine the process speeds using a single torch or cutting tool. Using these parameters, laser has the fastest cut speeds on thin materials (less than 3⁄8 in.), but plasma has the highest productivity over a range of material types and thicknesses, as it can cut many materials anywhere from 20 to 200 inches per minute (IPM). Laser is fast on thin materials, typically 30 to 500 IPM, but slows down on thicker materials more than 3⁄8 in. Waterjet is by far the slowest cutting process. Depending on thickness and quality level, speeds on metal plate range from a fraction of an inch per minute up to 100 IPM.”

Machitech Automation CNC plasma cutting systems increase productivity in two primary ways: ease of use and reduced errors.  CNC plasma cutters are controlled by software that makes executing cuts much easier.  The CAD and CAM cutting software tells the torch exactly where to cut and the appropriate distance the torch should be at all times (automatic torch height control).  With automated, software-controlled cutting, there is no need for painstaking measurements and slow handheld cutting.  The software will generate cutting parameters and then effortlessly execute necessary cuts.  It is exactly this easy automated cutting from parameters in software that also helps reduce error.  Errors in cutting waste time and materials which metal fabrication shops do not have time or money for.  But, with CNC plasma cutting this problem is dramatically reduced so that you can rapidly produce the cuts that you need when you need them.  Allow CNC plasma cutters to enhance your productivity so that you can also enhance your profit.

Use a Water Jet for High Precision CNC Cutting

$

Water Jet cutting is an incredibly popular tool in metal fabrication because of its versatility.  Machitech Automation has a state-of-the-art water jet cutter that offers versatility in a unitized system.  Research has been conducted to determine what the best technology is for cutting metal and, many studies such as one from ScienceDirect has found, water jet is the best for many metal fabrication shops, “After analysing the results, I found that the most efficient way of cutting metal was by using the technique of water jet technology. This is supported by the following proposals: The first that water jet cutting is the most versatile method for the separation of materials, and that this technique can cut through almost any material such as steel, stone, ceramics, aluminium, glass, wood, plastics, laminates, etc. There is no limit related to current conductivity and reflection of light. The second is that this method of cutting is an environmentally friendly process that does not produce any harmful fumes. The only materials used are water and the abrasive. The third is that the water jet technique can cut thick as well as thin materials which is not the case with other methods which are only successful when cutting to a certain thickness. The fourth is that compared to laser and plasma cutting, water jet cutting material is a method by which there are no thermal deformation of the cut material. The fifth is that the structure of the cut surface's hydro-abrasive technique is of a very high quality in that the edges are rounded and the burr is virtually non-existent.”

5 Advantages of Automated CNC Routing

For decades, routing was a handheld process.  Though handheld routing is a beautiful art form and will certainly get the job done, it is not ideal for mass production or repetitive identical routing projects.  Though CNC routing machines are more expensive than handheld routers, the investment offers a number of advantages.  Below are 5 advantages of CNC routers, such as those produced by Machitech Automation.

  1. Precision and Accuracy
    • Handheld operation may get you up close and personal with the material you are fabricating but it has a far higher margin for error.  Humans simply can only produce so much precision and accuracy.  Even the steadiest hand can make a few errors.  Because a CNC router is controlled by computer software that communicates with the router, it gets precise instructions about routing parameters to ensure it completes the most precise and accurate work.  Because of increased accuracy, waste will be dramatically reduced which will also save money and time.
  2. Repeatability
    • Because of the aforementioned precision due to automation, repeatability with a CNC router is much easier than with a handheld router.  A CNC router can route the exact same thing over and over again with speed and accuracy, saving time and money by reducing waste and expediting work. Because it is an automated system, the machinery could literally be left over night and it would continue to route materials through the night.  The repeatability potential is truly outstanding.
  3. Ease of Operation
    • Automated CNC routers are exceptionally easy to use.  With some simple training, technicians can be taught how to use the CNC router software without needing to worry about being trained how to safely and effectively perform handheld router operation.
  4. Reduced Manpower Costs
    • Because it is easy to use, accurate and quick, a CNC router dramatically reduces manpower costs.  Jobs that would have taken multiple CNC router technicians to complete with handheld routers can be completed rapidly and accurately with an automated CNC routing system.  A far smaller team is needed for programming the CNC router software and completing the routing process.  Not only does it save money to reduce manpower costs, it literally pays for the CNC router itself.
  5. Improved Safety
    • Operating a handheld CNC router poses great risk to the operator and those around them.  Machitech Automation CNC routers are complete with safety features that protect against accidents that could seriously injure people and risk damaging fabrication shops.

We often talk about the advantages of CNC plasma cutting for industrial applications in which parts or pieces are being mass-produced.  And while there is certainly value in that, that is not the only useful application for CNC plasma cutters.  Though a CNC plasma cutting system is a large investment for any business, it is also a highly valuable one with a significant ROI.  And, while large industrial manufacturers may all have CNC plasma cutting systems, small businesses need them as well!  A small business is typically defined as a business with fewer than 100 employees and, according to Entrepreneur, small businesses make up more than 99% of employers.  And, over 97% of all U.S. exports of goods are from small businesses!  The fact is, there are a lot of small business producing a significant amount of U.S. goods and they can all benefit from more efficient and effective manufacturing processes; and that is exactly what a CNC plasma cutting system can do.

One of the most significant advantages of a CNC plasma cutter is its ability to maximize efficiency and productivity which ultimately leads to increased profitability.  Because a plasma cutter is controlled by a computer numerical controller (CNC) and sophisticated software, it requires fewer technicians and is able to produce far more cuts in a day.  Fewer technicians will be a significant saving and producing more cuts will lead to enhanced sales ability.  Needless to say, though it may be a big investment, a CNC plasma cutting system will more than pay for itself, even for small businesses.  Whether you are manufacturing small parts, artwork, HVAC components, or more, a CNC plasma cutter will improve efficiency for your small business.

In addition to requiring fewer technicians and the ability to produce more cuts in a day, a CNC plasma cutter is incredibly accurate.  Because it is controlled by software, cutting parameters are specifically defined and that software communicates with the controller to ensure that the correct cuts are always made.  Additionally, Machitech Automation CNC plasma cutting systems all have automatic torch height control (ATHC) which ensures that the torch is always at the ideal height for cutting which reduces warping and other damage to the materials being cut.  Less damage and wasted materials means significant savings on materials and again, increased profits.  Small businesses may be operating with a smaller cash flow than large industrial manufacturing companies but a CNC plasma cutter is an invaluable investment that will more than pay for itself and will, in fact, increase profits in the long run.

A CNC plasma cutting system is an investment from which every workshop of just about any size can benefit.  Not only can CNC plasma cutting systems cut a variety of metals and materials but it can do so with ease and efficiency.  Machitech Automation designs only the most durable and technology-driven plasma cutting systems to ensure that customers are always getting the best value that is sure to stand up to the test of time and use.  Machitech Automation carries a selection of cutting systems that are perfect for any size workshop and the variety of features can accommodate a wide variety of unique needs.  Below are 3 reasons every workshop needs a CNC plasma cutting system.

  1. Expedites Cutting for Higher Productivity
    • One of the most exciting features of a CNC plasma cutting system is that it dramatically expedites cutting.  Because the plasma torch is controlled by the CNC software and controller, the slow process of handheld cutting eliminated and replaced with fast, accurate cutting.  As the machine automatically churns out the perfect cuts at a fast speed, you are able to produce far more in a much shorter span of time.  This is helpful for a workshop of any size – whether small or mass-production because ultimately, better efficiency means increased profits.
  2. Lower Cost of Labor to Maximize Workshop Efficiency
    • Because the cutting process is automated, far less manual labor is required when using a CNC plasma cutting system.  A well-trained technician can operate the CNC plasma cutting system and churn out hundreds or even thousands of cuts in a day which would normally require many work technicians if doing it by hand.  The lower cost of labor ultimately saves money and pays for the cost of the machine in a short amount of time.
  3. Reduced Materials Waste
    • Precise handheld plasma cutting can be achieved but it is notoriously difficult and often requires significant training to be able to accomplish.  Every wrong cut, or cut made at an incorrect height ultimately means wasted materials and lost money.  When a workshop of any size installs a CNC plasma cutting system, the cutting process is not only far quicker but much more accurate.  The plasma torch motion is controlled by sophisticated software and automatic torch height control (ATHC) helps ensure that the torch is always at the ideal height to achieve the most precise cuts without wasting material.

How is Plasma Cutting Achieved

You may know that you like CNC plasma cutting and you may know that it produces some of the best cuts possible.  Plasma torches are capable of producing some of the best cuts possible, particularly when controlled by a CNC plasma cutting system.  One of the big features of a CNC plasma cutting system is that it is much safer than handheld cutting.  But, make no mistake, it is not without some hazard and it is vitally important that safety precautions be taken at all times.  At Machitech Automation, we produce only the highest quality cutting systems and part of what makes them so high quality is that we take important precautions to ensure customer safety and absolute accuracy.  For this reason, we have designed all of our CNC plasma cutting systems with automatic torch height control (ATHC) and magnetic torch breakaway.

Automatic torch height control is operated by the system’s CNC software.  The software communicated with the ATHC and tells it the precise height at which to hold the torch at all times during the cutting process.  It can move up and down as needed during cutting and this will ultimately provide the optimal cut with clean edges and precise lines.  It takes the typical guesswork that would be associated with handheld cutting out of the equation and mechanizes the process for improved results.

Additionally, the mechanized plasma torch has magnetic torch breakaway. How this is accomplished is magnets are mounted to the torch holder side of the breakaway attaching plate and also are mounted on the torch riser breakaway attaching plate.  In plasma cutting systems that are not fitting with a magnetic torch breakaway, if a collision happens the torch would be knocked out of alignment or even damaged but with a magnetic torch breakaway, the torch quickly breaks away instead and can be easily and accurately reattached without damage.  Further, not only will the torch break away but the machine will pause.  And, the plasma cutting system has ohmic and touch pressure sensors for surface detection.  At Machitech Automation, when you invest in one of our CNC plasma cutting systems you know that you are getting a complete system – every detail has been carefully planned and accounted for.  Precision and safety are keys to our systems functionality and our customers can rest assured that their investment is the best possible system on the market.

Fiber laser cutting continues to accelerate in the market as an advanced cutting option. Fiber lasers have a smaller beam diameter than CO2 lasers which provides a more precise cut, as well as a decreased kerf width and heat penetration.  Fiber lasers use a highly focused beam of light to engrave or completely cut through a variety of materials.  The beam is controlled by CNC CAD drawing and CAM cutting software so that the laser is moved with precision to create even the most intricate of work.  Fiber laser cutting systems are exceptionally useful for a variety of applications and materials.

Fiber lasers can cut a variety of steel types, a variety of aluminum types, brass, copper, nylon and more.  And, not only can fiber lasers cut those materials but they cut them far better and far more safely than CO2 lasers.  Further, fiber lasers are far more energy efficient when cutting than CO2 lasers.  Fiber lasers cut with far more speed than CO2 lasers when cutting thin materials and they are able to cut reflective materials without the concern of reflections damaging the machine.  This is particularly important when cutting copper, brass, or aluminum.

As mentioned, fiber lasers can be used for a variety of applications with ease and excellence.  In industrial manufacturing where higher output is incredibly important, fiber laser cutters are the ideal choice. This includes industries like automotive, aerospace, military, HVAC, appliances, medical, and more.  At Machitech Automation, we pride ourselves on only working with industry leaders which is why we work with Alpha Lazer to supply our clients with state-of-the-art laser cutting solutions.  We have models to accommodate any workshop size or cutting needs.  For example, the Fiber SL is an entry level, cost-effective fiber laser cutting solution that has been specifically designed for smaller cutting needs.  It is exceptionally easy to use but can produce the precise cuts you want in a powerful system.  The Fiber M-Series is designed for the sheet metal industry and can accommodate a wide range of sheet sizes that range from 5' x 10' up to 8' x 40' and a tube cutting attachment is available.  Additionally, Machitech Automation carries the Alpha Lazer Fiber 3D which is a tube and pipe cutting solution that boasts an automatic loading and unloading arm that feeds the machine. If you are looking for a diverse, technology-driven cutting method that has a variety of applications, laser cutting may be the right tool for your workshop.
